I can’t believe that Prop 8 passed. I don’t think I will ever understand why there are people out there who are against gay marriages. Two gay people getting married is in no way, shape, or form hurting any of the people who are against it. Those people who say they are against it due to religious reasons is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Just because you are against it with YOUR religion does not mean that’s everyone’s religion. Why should they make decisions for other people who may not even follow the Christian (or whatever) religion’s views. That’s like me saying my religion says that I can’t eat meat on Fridays, so I’m going to make it illegal for ANYONE to eat meat on Fridays.

Which brings me to religion. I was raised Catholic and even went to a private, Catholic school for 9 years. Even when I was young, I thought some of the things that we were taught were just absolutely ridiculous and probably untrue. The biggest thing that I always wondered was how people took the bible so literally. The bible was not written in English and also was not written in the past hundred years or so. Therefore, things had to be translated. I don’t know if any of you have ever played the game Telephone. But basically, one person whispers something to somebody sitting next to them, and then that person whispers what they just heard to someone else and so on. By the end of the game, whatever the last person thinks the first person said is in no way true. That’s kind of how I see the bible. I have nothing against organized religion, what I DO have something against though is people that push their beliefs on other people. Whether this be by voting against gay marriages or by knocking door to door.

This may seem silly, but I honestly think a part in the movie Dogma really sums up a lot of things with religion:
Rufus: He still digs humanity, but it bothers Him to see the shit that gets carried out in His name – wars, bigotry, televangelism. But especially the factioning of all the religions. He said humanity took a good idea and, like always, built a belief structure on it.
Bethany: Having beliefs isn’t good?
Rufus: I think it’s better to have ideas. You can change an idea. Changing a belief is trickier. Life should malleable and progressive; working from idea to idea permits that. Beliefs anchor you to certain points and limit growth; new ideas can’t generate. Life becomes stagnant.
