Inauguration Blogging

I’m sitting here, in a room up at school on my laptop watching the inauguration live. I want to say more right now, but everything is just really getting started! This is a pretty awesome moment though.

Edited: So I thought I would try to blog this.

11:47 a.m.: Dianne Feinstein (Democratic, Senator, California) is speaking right now. Referring to future generations: “They will look back and remember this was the moment when the dream that once echoed across history from the steps to the Lincoln memorial finally reached the walls of the White House”

11:49 a.m.: Rick Warren, Pastor of Saddle Back Church from Lake Forest, CA is doing the invocation. “We know today that Dr. King and a great cloud of witnesses are shouting in heaven.”
Watching all the people praying together is really amazing.

11:54 a.m.: Aretha Franklin is introduced to sing “My Country ’tis of Thee.” Her hat is out of control (in a good way).

11:57 a.m.: Wow, I can’t believe how many people are there! Robert Bennet is introduced. Introducing John Paul Stevens.

11:58 a.m.: Biden is getting sworn in! (My CNN.com is lagging really bad.) I seriously love Biden! He always looks so happy.

11:59 a.m.: I just know my CNN is going to lag, luckily I’m also DVR’ing this.

12:01 p.m.: Okay I’m picking up another feed now (ABC) Obama looks so happy! Music is being played, my feeds were lagging so I’m not sure who exactly is playing. They sound really great though! I can’t even imagine how nervous the Obama family must be.

12:05 p.m.: Chief Justice is administrating the oath of office to the president. He’s laughing! Aw he started talking before the Chief Justice was done, and the Chief of Justice messed up the oath! Michelle looks amazing and so proud.

12:08 p.m.: President Obama is speaking now.
“So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood.”
“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.”
“In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned.”
“Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.”

12:17 p.m.: Still giving his speech! His one daughter (I’m not such which) is taking pictures of her dad.

George W. looks a little annoyed / like he really doesn’t want to be there.

“And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.”

“Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.”

* I apologize if some of these quotes are not 100% right. Here is the text of his full speech.

Ranting

I can’t believe that Prop 8 passed. I don’t think I will ever understand why there are people out there who are against gay marriages. Two gay people getting married is in no way, shape, or form hurting any of the people who are against it. Those people who say they are against it due to religious reasons is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Just because you are against it with YOUR religion does not mean that’s everyone’s religion. Why should they make decisions for other people who may not even follow the Christian (or whatever) religion’s views. That’s like me saying my religion says that I can’t eat meat on Fridays, so I’m going to make it illegal for ANYONE to eat meat on Fridays.

Which brings me to religion. I was raised Catholic and even went to a private, Catholic school for 9 years. Even when I was young, I thought some of the things that we were taught were just absolutely ridiculous and probably untrue. The biggest thing that I always wondered was how people took the bible so literally. The bible was not written in English and also was not written in the past hundred years or so. Therefore, things had to be translated. I don’t know if any of you have ever played the game Telephone. But basically, one person whispers something to somebody sitting next to them, and then that person whispers what they just heard to someone else and so on. By the end of the game, whatever the last person thinks the first person said is in no way true. That’s kind of how I see the bible. I have nothing against organized religion, what I DO have something against though is people that push their beliefs on other people. Whether this be by voting against gay marriages or by knocking door to door.

This may seem silly, but I honestly think a part in the movie Dogma really sums up a lot of things with religion:
Rufus: He still digs humanity, but it bothers Him to see the shit that gets carried out in His name – wars, bigotry, televangelism. But especially the factioning of all the religions. He said humanity took a good idea and, like always, built a belief structure on it.
Bethany: Having beliefs isn’t good?
Rufus: I think it’s better to have ideas. You can change an idea. Changing a belief is trickier. Life should malleable and progressive; working from idea to idea permits that. Beliefs anchor you to certain points and limit growth; new ideas can’t generate. Life becomes stagnant.

Election 2008

I’m still in shock. I honestly was so unsure of what would go down tonight, and I definitely didn’t think I’d be posting about the outcome of the election before I went to sleep. My state of Ohio went blue, which I was in complete shock over. Obama’s speech was amazing, and I really believe things will change. We’ve had somebody who has had “experience” running this country for the past 8 years and it’s gotten us absolutely no where. What the hell, we might as well try someone who doesn’t have as much experience. That and the fact that: I like being able to have a choice when it comes to my body (Pro Choice), I fully support the sciences (such as stem cell research), I don’t think we should even BE in Iraq considering they have yet to find any WMD’s so I really think we should be starting to withdraw, “Drill Baby Drill” is one of the most sickening phrases I have ever heard, and Obama’s kids get to have a puppy in the White House.

Now all I’m waiting to hear about is Prop 8.
