A few days ago, I was feeling restless and decided to go on a walk. When you have not one, but two puppies it seems almost cruel to go on that great adventure outside without taking them. I was then faced with a dilemma: which one should I take? Unable to decide between the two, I took both of them. What a mistake.
Keep in mind that these are not your ordinary small puppies that are still at the age where they are somewhat easy to maneuver around. They are both over 40 pounds, six months old, don’t walk very nice on a leash yet, and feel the need to go after anything that moves. Which, I understand the last two things are completely normal for puppies so why I thought this walk would be the miracle walk where they started acting like well behaved dogs is beyond me. But my judgment was clouded and I wanted out of the house. I hooked them up to their leashes, grabbed a poop bag and off we went. The walk down the driveway went well, even the walk down to the end of our street went well. I was feeling a little too confident in my decision. Why was I scared to do this? This is easy! Then, we turned the corner and were met with the one neighbor walking her Irish Setter and the barking began. I managed to walk away from the distraction. When I say walk what I really mean is I made silly noises like an idiot to get my dogs attention and dragged them away from the dog they were trying to desperately to play with.
I managed to pull them away and we continued around the block, passing by only a few houses before our next distraction: cats. A bit of a sidenote here, but the puppies absolutely love cats. Our one cat hates the dogs and always tries to swat at them, but the other one is incredibly good natured and lets the dogs nudge him with their noses and get right up on the couch with them. Anyways, so they saw these two cats sitting in a driveway and they went nuts, pulling at the leash, barking, whining, the whole bit. Of course, it didn’t stop there. Two people got out of the car in the same driveway with a dog smaller than the cats that took off running at my dogs. It took all of my power to hold onto the two beasts and then the lady tries to have a conversation with me. Really? Do you not see the two massive puppies I’m trying to control? I really don’t feel like talking about how long we’ve lived here, what type of puppies these are, etcetera.
But our adventure continued. Next up on the agenda a few houses down? A bunny. Which this time I saw it before they did so I tried to do this awkward shuffle to get them past the house without them seeing it but of course, that failed. Repeat the barking and pulling on the leash that’s previously happened. So, by this time I was just about to turn back onto my street, finally I can see salvation! But no. Who comes walking around the corner from the opposite block? Irish setter lady from our first encounter, who just so happens to live several houses down from us. So I had to follow her all the way down the street. Really though, I was following my dogs because they were pulling so far ahead of me.
Needless to say, I was not restless anymore after that adventure and call me crazy but the next day I thought maybe I should do this again.

Man, that sounds like a very hectic walk. I’m very surprised that you managed to make it home. But, I also know how you feel, I once had to walk to older dogs at the same time, that weren’t very good at listening, and wanted to smell everything in their path.
Just know, that the more you walk those dogs together, and the more you teach them how to behave, the easier it will get.
Good luck!
